Announcement of the Pre RSPO RT16 Field Trip: Sabah Towards 100% RSPO Certification, 11-12 November 2018, Sandakan, Sabah

Register for 2-days Field Trip: Sabah Towards 100% RSPO Certification

Sabah has been and is still adopting the jurisdictional approach when it comes to dealing with oil palm plantations within the State. This is in pursuant to the State Cabinet’s decision made in November 2015 to bring all oil palm plantations, including the smallholders towards RSPO Certification by 2025. This is to be achieved through the Sabah Jurisdictional Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (Sabah JCSPO), a ten-year Initiative that aims to

1.        Transform Sabah’s palm oil production and supply chain;

2.        Halt deforestation;

3.        Restore ecosystem; and

4.        Secure sustainable livelihoods.

The three (3) intermediate key goals of this Initiative are:

a.         Achieving no loss of High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) Forests for all oil palm in Sabah;

b.        Enabling zero–conflict in oil palm production landscapes in Sabah; and

c.         Strengthening smallholder sustainability and uplift local livelihoods.

In pursuant to the introduction of the Sabah JCSPO Initiative, a multi–stakeholders steering committee, known as the Jurisdictional Certification Steering Committee (JCSC) was established. The JCSC comprises of three (3) working groups as follows:

1.        HCV–Compensation Working Group;

2.        Smallholders Working Group; and

3.        Free, Prior, Informed and Consent (FPIC) Working Group.

Since its establishment, the JCSC had been actively working towards achieving the following goals: i) producing a state–wide HCV map and determining compensation mechanism, ii) cataloguing the smallholders within the State and iii) developing a Sabah specific FPIC Guide.

In conjunction with the RSPO RT16, a 2–days field trip is coordinated for interested party to gain ground experience and develop deeper understanding on the on–going efforts on HCV mapping, cataloguing smallholders and the development of a FPIC Guide within the pilot areas Telupid, Tongod, Beluran and Kinabatangan (TTBK). Planned field trip as below:
